Final Crit

Im not sure if we have to write something for our final crit... but I will anyway. I think people really enjoyed my piece. I think that I showed it to a lot of people before the crit so they already saw the video and I think that effected my feed back. I would have liked to add more pictures to the video, I do feel the end was a little forced. If it was something I could have done over finals week I would have. Unfortunately time did not allow me to take more photos and I had to work with what I had. But overall I was satisfied with my first stop motion project and happy with the result, especially the first few seconds with the duct tape.

Mike Kelley.

Mike Kelley seems like a really cool guy. I think it is interesting in the article when they say he "picked up where pop art left off," I think that is an interesting overall concept. I like the work they described, the stuffed animals sewn together into one blanket. Thats a cool idea because the stuffed animals where objects a child once loved, but now, like the article said, they are being sold at a flee market. Its to bad he killed himself, especially considering the amount of money he was making. I quickly googled his art after reading this article, it is very colorful and collective. Collective art is interesting to me.

My Crit.

My Crit. Went better than expected, I think I was harder on myself personally than the students where in class. I didn't feel like the part I disliked about the piece, the background of the pro-gay boy scouts poster, was ever really resolved. I still dislike it but also I still don't know what to do with it. At this point I feel like making a solid rainbow background over a gradient rainbow background wont make that much of a difference, and if it dose it will be slight. Also people have to hop off the grammar wagon, yeah its important if your going to print stuff. But this is all changeable, typos happen. We should be concentrating on the design. Im ok with mentioning things are spelt wrong or improper grammar was used but after that drop it. Also i'm really impressed with my classmates skill level in these programs. I really liked all of the projects presented, people are so talented.

Oh No Helvetica

I watched the Documentary about helvetica. Thats why i'm typing this in helvetica. Helvetica is a type face that was created in Switzerland. At first everyone was excited about the newness and the cleanness of the font. It was most modern. But then, like everything new and exciting, it became over used. They people started to hate it and tried to go against it. And that was fun I guess.  Like the lady from Tyler School of Art said, "Helvetica is the reason for the Vietnam war," and I think i'm going to get that tattooed on my body somewhere...anyway the point of the documentary is that some people really...REALLY like type face.

My Critique

For my frist critique, the most helpful tip I got out of the experience is that my work has to have more of a purpose. I like making work where the purpose is hard to figure out, or lacks a purpose or meaning that is particularly deep. I am usually interested in work that lacks meaning, or is focused on technical skill, like a focus on line or color or shapes, as opposed to artwork that says something about a group or culture. But I think, especially in photoshop, the works should have a deeper meaning. I also liked being able to look up artists that could help with my work. I think next work I do I will look up the artists before i start my project to help give me ideas of what I want to do.

New York Times Article

I think that its interesting, using the imagery of volcanos in a landscape to make a statement about the civil war. I remember learning that during the civil war photography was breaking through as a new form of art, so that that accurately documented the civil war, so the volcanic landscapes is an interesting take on the whole situation. I feel that American art is very set in landscape so the volcanic landscapes are almost a traditional way of paying homage to the civil war. Seeing this work, at first i thought of the lack of actual volcanos in America, none that I can think of in the north or south. But it made me realize that you can bring a little of the surreal into a classic landscape and still have it be an interesting piece.
